ABOUT/DESCRIPTION
What type of heater is it? An electric wall-mounted panel heater.
What is it made of?
Cement fibre board.
How does it work?
It uses the principle of hot air rising, or natural convection heating. This very economic form of "natural" heating is safe and efficient and produces a room with a more even temperature throughout.
What size is it?
The larger heater measures 600 x 600 x 10mm (400 watts), the smaller heater measures 450 x 600 x 10mm (260 watts).
Is it Silent?
Yes. There is no noise at all.
Can I paint it?
Yes, the panel heater can be painted with any acrylic water based paint (no oil-based paints) to match, or contrast with, any wall colour. We recommend leaving the heater turned off for 24 hours after painting.
Can I wallpaper it?
No. The heat would cause the wallpaper to peel off.
Does it have a thermostat or timeswitch?
No. There is an ECONO-HEAT® Time Switch Socket Outlet which can be purchased separately, Click here for more details.
Also, any plug-in timeswitch can be used.
USING AN ECONO-HEAT®
How economical? We believe the ECONO-HEAT® wall heaters are the most economical electric panel heater on the market today. The heater is such a low wattage (only 260 and 400 watts) to operate. The 260 watt uses 5-6* cents electricity per hour and the 400 watt uses less than 9* cents of electricity per hour, that is the equivalent power consumed by 3-5 incandescent light bulbs. *Based on an electricity price of 22 cents per unit (kWh), incl GST.
Please Note: These figures are only approximate and personal heating requirements and specific applications may vary.
How can that be effective?
There is a constant circulation of hot air rising from a large surface area between the electric wall heater and the wall. There is also a small amount of direct heat radiating from the surface. These two forms of heating result in an effective and inexpensive heating system.
What size room will it heat?
The small panel will generally heat a room of about 3m x 3m (9m2) **. The large panel will generally heat a room of about 3m x 4m (12m2) **. You can add as many heaters as you like to heat any size of room or home, creating a cost-effective central heating system.
Personal heating requirements and specific applications may vary. We suggest if you are unsure you purchase one panel first. After trialling it in your home in your climate you will have a better idea of how many others you may require and in what rooms. **Both figures assuming a 2.4m ceiling height with insulated walls and ceiling.
What if the room has no wall insulation?
Do not install the convector heater on an uninsulated exterior wall. As the main means of heating is convection, the wall behind the panel will get warm. If this is an uninsulated exterior wall, there will be some heat lost directly outside.
How long will it take to heat my room?
It will take approximately 15 minutes for the panel heater to reach its maximum surface temperature. The time taken to heat the room will depend on the nature of the room. It may be as little as another 30 to 60 minutes if the room was warm to begin with, several hours if the room was cold.
Do I still need it if I have central heating in my home?
Indeed, the ECONO-HEAT® wall panel heater can be used in conjunction with central heating installations to help you save on central heating costs. By using the ECONO-HEAT® wall panel heater at the beginning or end of winter you can create heat more economically and keep the central heating switched off for longer.

Can I cover the panel heater?
No. Anything placed on or against the panel heater and/or obstructing the convection channel between the panel heater and the wall will cause it to overheat. This will damage the panel heater and the wall.
How safe is it for children and pets?
The panel heater has no exposed elements and a surface temperature of approximately 75 - 90°C depending on the ambient temperature. It is not made of metal and because it is mounted to a wall it won't tip over. As long as a person has a 'reflex reaction' and the ability to remove themselves from the panel we do not expect them to be burnt.
How does it compare with other electric heaters?
An oil-filled column heater will use approximately 50% more electricity to keep the room at the same temperature as the Econo-Heat panel. The Econo-Heat panel has also been proven to heat a room up more quickly, and to a higher temperature than other freestanding radiant heaters and other wall-mounted panel heaters we tested using the same wattage. We are not Heating Consultants and are not experts in other forms of heating (e.g. heat pump and radiant heater). We have provided actual energy consumption of these panels on this website. Anecdotally, due to the nature of the natural convection created by the ECONO-HEAT® panel, it appears to create a better result in a room than any free-standing heater, as long as you have selected the panel correctly for the room size and have the panel turned on for an appropriate length of time.
INSTALLATION
Do I need an Electrician to install it? No. It just plugs in to a power point. We expect any person who can operate a drill and screwdriver to be able to install it. Go to ' Useful Downloads' to watch a short video.
How do I install it?
Every heater comes with an installation kit and easy to follow instructions. Please do not use a battery operated screwdriver, as screwing the plasterboard anchor screws in too quickly could break them. Go to ' Useful Downloads' for fitting instructions.
What walls can I install it on?
Any wall where the natural convection is going to work best. Do NOT install the ECONO-HEAT® panel heater on an uninsulated exterior wall. Heat will be lost through the wall. Do NOT install under a window. Heat will possibly be lost behind the curtains/blinds. All other walls we expect to be OK.
How close can the panel be to a right angle wall?
A minimum distance of 100mm is recommended.
How close can furnishings and other items be when placed infront of the panel?
A distance of at least 200mm is recommended. If it is a solid item, ideally it would be raised off the floor to allow for sufficient airflow underneath the panel.
Can I install the panel in a bathroom?
No. This is not recommended.
Does the panel have to go on a wall?
Yes. The gap of 18-20mm between the panel and the wall is critical for the best distribution of heat by natural convection.
How hot does the wall behind the panel get?
Maximum temperature is approximately 50°C. This is acceptable for all building materials that we know of.
Where is the cord and plug in the pictures?
The cord is attached at the back of the panel in the bottom right hand corner.
Can I rotate the panel to have the cord entering on the bottom left?
Yes. The switch will then be underneath the panel.
When I first turn on the panel heater there is quite a smell coming from it. Is this normal?
Yes. Many new heaters emit a smell when first used. This normally lasts only for a day or two depending on amount of use. Any new heater 'smell' is non-toxic, so no need for alarm. If the smell is not to your liking we suggest you open the windows and leave the panel heater on for several hours before occupying the room.
HISTORY
These look new to New Zealand. How long have they been on the market? ECONO-HEAT® panel heaters have been available in New Zealand since 2001. Over 30,000 have been successfully installed throughout our country. We only started actively promoting them on television nationwide in 2008.
